GEOGRAPHY FINAL: Bryan Russell Baldridge

The region of North Africa and Southwest Asia is an area rich in oil.  Oil is found throughout the region, from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iran westward into the less plentiful oil reserves of Jordan, Lebanon, and Tunisia.  The global demand for oil and natural gas has made the region oil rich.  The region holds 69 percent of the world’s oil reserves and estimates show that number to continue to hold with abundant petroleum reserves.  The region is split into three major fossil fuel zones.  The first zone is considered the world’s largest supply of oil and is located within the Arabian-Iranian sedimentary basin, which extends from northern Iraq into the lower Persian Gulf.  The second zone is located in North Africa to include the countries of Algeria, Libya, and northern sections of Egypt.  The third major petroleum zone is located in the African country of Sudan.  With all the oil in the region, the distribution of the oil is uneven.  In the oil-rich areas, oil is the most precious resource.  The revenue from oil can buy the equipment to provide the area with the essential resource, water.  Water is a scarce resource in the region and money from oil production allows the region to drill wells and pump water.  The revenue from oil production in the region is major, recently, the United Arab Emirates completed the World, a series of man built islands in the shape of the world  the islands and much of the cities new architectural landscapes were made possible from oil revenue.  Money from oil has found its way into the mainstream population with new schools and hospitals being built.  Oil is the most important resource in the region.  Water is essential for survival, but revenue from oil production allows wells and different agricultural techniques to provide the region with water.
